On May 27, Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer announced that USDA has authorized certain acreage enrolled under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to be available for haying and grazing. CRP participants can request to use CRP acreage for critical feed use beginning June 2.

"CRP participants can use their own acreage for haying or grazing or lease the privilege to other producers," said Kirby Payne, executive director for Daviess County Farm Service Agency. "Participants who choose this option will be required to pay a $75 administrative fee per contract and will not be assessed a payment reduction from their annual rental payments."

Payne said eligible land may not be hayed or grazed until after the primary nesting season, which for Missouri, is May 1 through July 15. In addition, all hay and livestock must be removed from the CRP acreage by Nov. 10.

Only certain CRP practices are eligible for this release. For more information on CRP haying and grazing eligibility and program provisions, call the Daviess County FSA at 660-663-3703 or visit online at www.fsa.usda.gov.

Missouri landowners can apply June 2-13 to enroll land in the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced.

Dwaine Gelnar, NRCS assistant state conservationist, says landowners who apply for WHIP will know by June 27 if their applications have been approved.

NRCS uses WHIP to provide technical expertise and cost-sharing to enhance habitat on eligible land for upland and wetland wildlife, threatened and endangered species, and other types of wildlife identified as rare or declining species.

Many types of land, including grassland, woodland, wetlands, stream and riparian areas, agricultural land and non-agricultural land may be eligible for WHIP funds.

To sign up for WHIP, contact the NRCS office serving your county. Look in the phone book under "U.S. Government, Department of Agriculture," or access this website: http://offices.usda.gov. You can also get more information about WHIP online at http://www.mo.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/whip/whip.html.
