On Oct. 23, 2007, the congregation of the First Christian Church broke ground on an approximately 7,700 sq.ft. building addition. The addition includes a sanctuary and classroom space as well as space for a new daycare ministry known as the Lighthouse Learning Center. The crews worked all through the winter and the congregation held their first worship service in the new sanctuary on April 20 with over 350 people in attendance.
The sanctuary will seat 350 people and the fellowship hall will serve as overflow seating with a live link to the audio and video systems in the sanctuary. The sanctuary will be home to 13 stained glass windows from the former uptown sanctuary as well as the choir rail that has been modified to serve as the rail for the sound booth.
The congregation has been blessed with a gift of 200 worship chairs that matched the ones currently in use as well as banners, and handcrafted cross that stands above the baptistery. Outside the sanctuary stands the bell from the uptown church and it can once again be heard every Sunday morning.
The new facility is equipped with a smoke and fire detection system that sounds an alarm and strobe lights throughout the building when a smoke alarm or pull station is activated. The alarm system also dials out to four individuals to let them know that the alarm has been activated. The congregation also updated the lights in the fellowship hall to flourescent and added several room dividers to maximize the classroom space.
You are invited to tour the new facility this Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. with dedication service and open house until 4 p.m. The church is located at 1501 South Main Street.
