Funeral services for Robert T. Bruner will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, at the Fremont Presbyterian Church, Fremont, Neb.
Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. today (Wednesday), with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. tonight at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont, Neb. Visitation on Thursday at the church will be one hour prior to service. Military honors will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post #854 and American Legion Post #20 at the church following the funeral service. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery, Fremont at a later date. Memorials may be given to the church and to the Optimist Childhood Cancer Campaign.
Robert T. Bruner, 87, Fremont, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Bruner was born March 24, 1921, at Nickerson, Neb. The family moved to Missouri in 1933. He graduated from Gallatin High School and attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont.
Mr. Bruner enlisted in the Army Air Force and served during WWII from Feb. 20, 1943, to Sept. 24, 1943.
Mr. Bruner returned to Nickerson and operated a grocery store there for several years. He was employed by Sherwin Williams as a field representative for 20 years, and then worked for Bower-Taylor NAPA Store in Fremont for 20 years.
He moved to Fremont in 1958. Mr. Bruner was a member of the Fremont Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post #20 of Fremont, charter member and past president of the Fremont Coin Club, served as a board member with Crime Stoppers, member of Fremont Optimist Club and held all local offices and attended 10 International Conventions and served one term as president and was named outstanding distinguished president. He was a two time recipient of the Optimist of the Year in the State of Nebraska and served one term at Lt. Governor of the Nebraska Optimists. He was chairman of the Optimist Club Kids Fishing Contest for 18 years. He was awarded the Woodmen of the World Volunteer of the Year and received an award from the Dodge County Humane Society for 20 yrs of service. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 and the former Elks Club at Fremont and the Nickerson Volunteer Fire Dept.
He married Doris Lueninghoener in 1942 at Lincoln. They later divorced. He then married Darlene Feye Paulin on Dec. 23, 1970, at Fremont.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; two sons, Robert D. Bruner of Lincoln, Neb., and Douglas Bruner of Fremont, Neb.; two daughters, Marilyn Bruner of North Bend, Neb., and Gloria Allen Whitlock of Colorado Springs, Colo.; step-daughter, Kathy Lackey of Fremont; two brothers, Byron Bruner of Long Beach, Calif., and Wendell Bruner of Fremont; one sister, Berdeen Hoover of Fremont; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
