The 9 and under Northwest Vipers were back in action last weekend at the Spring Shootout at Tiffany Hills Sports Complex, though they won only one game and lost two in heartbreaking fashion.

The Vipers started play on Saturday with a 12-11 loss to the Buchanan County Thunder after coming from four-run deficit to tie the game at 6-6 in the last inning. Winston’s Craig Lewis entered the game in relief and pitched 5 2/3 frames in the extra inning contest.

A 10-9 loss to the St. Joe Titans followed for the Northwest team after the Vipers had opened up an 8-2 lead through five innings. The Titans rolled to a 9-8 advantage with a late-inning rally, but the Vipers tied the score in the top of the last inning but could not prevent a second straight loss.

The Vipers battled back on Sunday to defeat the DeSoto Scrappers, 15-7, with Lewis contributing a pair of hits and two runs scored.

The Vipers started the 2008 baseball season off with a 2-2 record and fourth place finish at the Sandlot Classic held at the Mid-America Sports Complex in Johnson County, Kan.

The Vipers started the tournament with a 14-8 victory over KC Astros, with Lewis providing the spark at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in.

Lewis earned the save on the mound in a 5-3 Vipers win over KC Rebels in game two. He pitched a scoreless inning and also had a pair of RBI.

After entering pool play with a 2-1 record, the Vipers fell to number one seed Lawrence Jets in the single elimination tournament.

Following a weekend off, the Vipers will be back in action May 9-10 in Kansas City.
