After working for University of Missouri Extension for over 15 years, I’m still amazed at the variety of topics that we cover. Each of those disciplines has at least one specialist in each region and campus-based specialists as well. Our purpose in life is to provide you, the customer, with unbiased research-based information to help you in your endeavors.
Extension is well known for our agricultural help. Need help with your garden, landscaping or commercial horticulture crop? We have two horticulture specialists in the Northwest Region, and we’re only a phone call away. Agriculture also means livestock and crop production. Those of you raising livestock or crops are most likely already familiar with the many programs and assistance that we offer producers.
In addition to horticulture, livestock and agronomy specialists, we have faculty devoted to agriculture business and agricultural engineering. Our Ag Business Specialists can help you balance the books on your farm and show you ways to make your farm more profitable. Our Natural Resource Engineer is also available to help you in designing and maintaining the mechanical side of agriculture.
Where would Extension be without 4-H? For many people, that is their first exposure to Extension, when as children they enroll in a 4-H club and join in on the fun activities.
Extension has also long been known for nutrition and health education. We have specialists who teach principles of good nutrition, certainly an important and timely topic for everyone. Do you have questions on canning or freezing produce from your garden? Our Nutrition Specialists are the ones to ask.
But University of Missouri Extension is even more! Our Community Development Specialists work with communities to help them with issues that they may be experiencing, and help them plan for the future. Are you starting a business? Our Business Development Specialists are there to assist you with everything from your business plan on up.
We have folks who specialize in family financial education, human development, and housing and environmental design. Yes, Extension is the place for answers in almost anything!
Every year, we set aside a special time to celebrate Extension, and tell our story. Two of the counties that I serve have designated an “Extension Day,” with fun and activities, and you are invited!
The first one will be in Grundy County on Monday, May 12, at the courthouse in Trenton. The festivities begin at 11:30, and include a complete meal with pork burgers.
Our 4-H program assistant will be there to answer your questions about 4-H and enroll your children in a club if you desire.
Our housing and environmental design specialist will be there to help you with any housing questions you might have, including insulating your house, and design for energy savings. Finally, the Green Hills
Master Gardeners will be there to answer your gardening questions.
Of course, I will be there to talk about horticulture with you along with the Master Gardeners.
I will also be participating in a similar Extension Day in Daviess County. This will be held later this summer, with the date and location to be determined.
So get involved with your local Extension Center. Come have a pork burger. Learn how University of Missouri Extension can help you. That’s what we’re here for!
