The Winston R-6 School District was recently awarded a Special Education Improvement Grant through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The grant will be used to improve student writing skills and achievement in grades K-6 with the 6 + 1 Traits Writing Techniques.

Beginning in the 2008-09 school year, the grant which totals over $11,256.65, will be used to purchase new curriculum materials, train teachers in the 6 + 1 Traits, unify the K-12 writing curriculum, and implement district wide writing assessments.

The grant writing was spearheaded by Chanel Burge, curriculum director, with assistance from Bruce Bielby, special education director, Philip Pohren, elementary principal, and the Stakeholder Group.
