Gallatin enrichment students have been learning about Alaska and the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. On March 27, Enrichment Family Night was held. The students gave a presentation about Alaska and the Iditarod Race. The students also participated in an obstacle course that they had to maneuver while blindfolded using only verbal commands. Their parent gave them the sled dog commands “mush” for go, “whoa” for stop, “gee” for right, and “haw” for left. This was a fun activity enjoyed by all.
For Gifted Education Week (March 10-14), the enrichment class did Iditarod presentations for the entire elementary and also sponsored a school-wide IditaREAD. The teachers set reading goals for their students to work towards during the Iditarod Race. As the mushers worked towards meeting their goal of finishing the Iditarod Race, Gallatin students worked towards meeting their reading goals. Each student was given a musher card and IditaREAD bookmark made by enrichment students. Each class was also given a flat musher made by enrichment students to display in their room and cheer for during the race. Daily updates of the race were given over the intercom by enrichment student reporters.
Enrichment students made Alaska maps to scale with the Iditarod Trail marked. These maps were displayed throughout the elementary building and were used to track the Iditarod mushers during the race. Some other activities enjoyed by the enrichment students were making northern light pictures, making pretzel dog sleds and clay dogs, making salt dough maps of Alaska, and making arctic animal circle books. The enrichment students and their teacher, Mrs. Kim Brammer, appreciate Mrs. Cox and all of the elementary teachers and students for participating in the IditaREAD.
