Gallatin High School Science Olympiad Team, coached by Dennis Steigerwalt, received fourth place in the annual Science Olympiad hosted by North Central Missouri College in Trenton on March 1.
There were a total of 12 teams present, representing the NW district.
Plattsburg took first place, MO Academy of Science 2nd, Stanberry 3rd and Gallatin 4th, all continuing to state competition on March 15 at the University of MO-Columbia campus.
Other teams present were: Lawson, Northeast Nodaway, Parkview HS, Pattonsburg, Rock Port, South Harrison, Tarkio, and Trenton.
In the 23 different events held, Gallatin got one 1st place, five 3rd places, three 4th places, five 5th places finishes.
And a place in eight events with no medal or ribbon below 5th place (of which Gallatin finished around the middle out of 12 schools to be able to qualify for state by winning 4th place as a team).
Members of the high school team were: Seniors: Derrick McBroom, Mitch King, Jon Youd, and Jacob Smith; Juniors: TJ Little, Cary Uthe, Cameron King, Ryan Hicks, Andrew Pierce, Teresa Tairent (sick and unable to compete); Sophomores: Jamie Brinnen, Kevin Corwin, and Josh McLey: Freshman: Greg Parton.
Gallatin plans to attend the state competition on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri on Saturday March 15.
The team is planning to go down to Columbia on Friday if it can find enough adults to chaperon the students for an overnight stay.
