The Pattonsburg Board of Education voted to go with Midwest Digital Systems of Lawson for the purchase and installation of security cameras during their regular meeting held Feb. 20.

The school will have 10 cameras inside and two outside. The cameras will be in place before next school year.
Upon returning to open session after a closed meeting, the board offered contracts to Johnnie Silkett for another term as high school principal; Holly Brady for another term as elementary principal; and to Sally Sparks as teacher for high school math/communication arts. The board accepted the resignation of Katie Thompson, business teacher.
The Pattonsburg Board of Education recognized the many accomplishments of its students.
“We want to let the community know that we appreciate all the good things our students are doing,” said Superintendent Cheryl Cornett.
The junior high academic team is 10-0 in its conference and is the first seed in the junior high academic tournament. The academic team sponsor is Dan Dreesen.
The middle school Science Olympiad team placed eighth overall in competition at Maryville recently. First place went to the ecology team of Justin Conover and Katy Parton; second place to science crime busters team of Sarah Emerson and Emily Dilley; third place to science word team of Emily Dilley and Justin Conover; fourth place to bio process lab team of Courtney Warford and Sydney Hulett; fifth place to amphibians and reptiles team of Cydney Hulet and Tyler Fore; fifth place to write it – do it team of Scott Conover and Justin Conover; fifth place to reach for the stars team of Joel Teel and Michelle Roberts. Science Olympiad is sponsored by Twanette Hulett.
Joel Teel placed fifth in the Missouri State High School Athletics Association sports essay contest.
The Panther drum line performed Saturday at Gilman City for the HDC Conference Band Day.
The Pattonsburg band has 30 students participating and makes up the majority of the membership of the HDC band. Band and drum line sponsor is Jamie Dunagan.
The boy’s basketball team won the consolation trophy at the HDC Tournament, which was hosted by Pattonsburg. It was the second trophy brought home by the team this year. Derrick Brady is coach of the boys basketball team.
“We want to thank the faculty, community, parents, students and teachers for helping with the HDC Tournament,” said Mrs. Cornett. “It’s a big event, and it’s nice to have that much involvement.”
Students will attend the Washington Leadership Conference this summer along with Tri-County and other Daviess County students. Selection for the conference has not yet been made.
Principals Mr. Skillet and Mrs. Brady reported on attendance for the month and recognized honor roll students.
The board approved the 2008-2009 school calendar. The next school year will start on Aug. 20, 2008.
An amendment policy regarding student vision exams was approved.
MSIP updates were discussed and will be finalized before the MSIP visit on April 2.
Mr. Silkett and Mrs. Brady also spoke to the board about professional development that has been ongoing in the elementary and high school. Pattonsburg R-2 is working toward improving reading comprehension at both levels.
Lysander Overstreet and Marilyn Wehrli from the Northwest Regional Professional Development Center led the teacher inservice in January and returned in February to do follow up in classrooms.
They have been visiting and observing individual classrooms in order to directly implement the techniques for improved reading comprehension.
“Our professional development is across the board,” said Mrs. Cornett. “It’s very important that we follow that continuum.”
