Plans are well underway for this major regional 4-H activity. Saturday, Feb. 16, the teen camp counselors and 4-H staff met at the Fairport Bank meeting room, Osborn, for a full day of camp staff training and planning.
Camp Counselors from Daviess County will include Savannah Cox, Jamesport Brushy Squirrels, and Wren Tolen, Knee-Hi 4-H Club. Counselors were chosen from a pool of fifty candidates to fulfill the challenging leadership roles of camp counselor.
Counselors accept the responsibilities for their cabin of campers to mentor, lead, befriend, and guide the 8-13 year olds through a busy week of camp. Some proud moments returning counselors shared were: “Having all the campers want to come back”; ”Getting kids to try things they wouldn’t normally do"; and “Having campers notice me outside of camp.” Homesick campers and saying good bye were quoted by counselors as some of the common challenges they face.
The 2008 camp staff adopted their mission statement: “Our camp will provide a safe environment for campers where they can have fun and learn life skills.” Through the planning and camping process, the staff will be following this guide to create a memorable experience for almost 200 campers, ages 8-13.
Life skills are gained through the residential camp experience with traditional activities of canoeing, leather crafts, campfire, group dances, camp songs and swimming. Campers will be immersed with the Australian theme in the cultural arts, music, special programs, cabin challenges and activities throughout the week.
The first week of camp will be June 3-6, with the second week being held June 10-13.
Applications for camp will be available soon from local University of Missouri Extension offices.
