Meadville, ranked at the top of Class 1 polls for most of the season, advances to Saturday’s quarterfinal at NWMSU in Maryville following its 40-35 sectional win over the Lady Hawks.

Sargent, who scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, struggled early against man-to-man coverage by Gilman senior Kyla Payne. The Lady Hawks drew first blood and led, 14-4, by the middle of the opening period as Payne dogged her senior counterpart. For much of the first half, all Sargent could do was try to set up teammates when faced with Payne’s unrelenting pressure.

But for a layup with eight seconds left in the half, Meadville’s all-state center would have gone scoreless. Her lay in capped a 6-0 Lady Eagle surge that narrowed the gap to 14-10 at the break.

Meadville slowly gained steam in the third quarter, and by the 1:37 mark had its first lead, 29-27, following Sargent’s steal and layup.

Gilman City’s cold spell from the field, and mounting foul problems, crippled efforts to regain momentum. All-state guard Monica Wilson nailed a three-pointer at the 2:40 mark of the third, but the Lady Hawks would manage just one more bucket until late in the fourth quarter. Gilman exited the third period just one foul away from putting the Lady Eagles in the double bonus.

Ahead, 35-27, Meadville was content to work the ball around the perimeter and take as much time off the clock as possible. Freshman Taylor Whitney converted a baseline layup to pull Gilman to within 37-32 with 30 seconds left, but Meadville again used both the clock and foul line to kept the Lady Hawks at bay.

Senior Abbie Herrold banked a trey high off the glass in the fading moments, but Sargent hit a pair of free throws to make it a three-possession game, 40-32.

Wilson gutted it out in defeat by banking in a long three-pointer at the buzzer that capped an outstanding career at GCHS. She finished with 11 points.

Payne spread her team-leading 15 points across four quarters, but prior to foul problems, it was her defense that stood out in the first half.

Gilman City finished the season 25-3, with two losses coming against teams still alive in the state playoffs, Meadville and unbeaten Class 2 Hamilton.
