Gallatin senior Cody Selby battled back from an opening round loss to finish sixth in the 135-pound weight division at the 2008 MSHSAA State Wrestling Championship held last weekend in Mizzou Arena on the MU-Columbia campus.
Selby, who fought injuries early in the season, finished 3-3 in state competition on his way to a medal.
"It was great to see Cody get a medal,"said GHS head wrestling coach Phillip Limb. "This was a primary goal at the beginning of the season," he added. "I will definitely miss watching him wrestle next season."
It was Selby’s fortune to wrestle Whitfield’s Martin Tobias at both ends of the tournament. Tobias squeaked out a 4-2 decision over the GHS senior in their opening match on Thursday, and beat Selby in the final wrestleback round before the start of medal matches on Saturday. In between, Selby defeated Butler’s Cody Bennett, Polo’s Mitch Huntley and Lexington’s Bo Maze.
Lathrop’s Caleb Hartzel pulled out a 10-8 victory in Saturday’s match for the fifth place spot. Selby finished his season with a record of 24 wins and 4 losses.
Terrill Wood lost his opening bout in the 112-pound weight class to Knob Noster’s Kirk Luzano, who would eventually finish third. He was unable to advance past the first wrestleback round after a loss to Polo’s Hollis Fee.
Wood finished the season with a 16-14 record.
"I was very proud of how the boys wrestled at state," Coach Limb state. "Our season had a lot of bumps in the road, but we did the best we could," said Limb. "Some of the positives are that we were young overall and this will be great for next year," he added.
