Cecilia C. Whitt, 88, passed away, Jan. 27, 2008 at the Cameron Regional Medical Center. Services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the First Christian Church in Gallatin. Family visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Friends may call after 11 a.m., Monday at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery near Gallatin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gallatin First Christian Church, Building Fund.
Cecilia was born Aug. 17, 1919 to Nickolas and Frances (Wennmacher) Smith in Aurora, Ill. She attended school in Aurora. Cecilia was united in marriage to Herbert O. Whitt in August of 1935 in Aurora. Herb and Cecilia moved to Cameron, Mo., for a short period of time before moving to a farm northeast of Gallatin in 1943. They lived on the farm for 40 years before moving to Gallatin in 1983.
Cecilia was a loving mother who took great pride in raising her children. She enjoyed gardening and spent hours canning and preparing food for her family. Cecilia’s home was always open to family and friends. She loved to play cards and enjoyed fishing, especially her trips to Canada with her sons. Cecilia was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Gallatin for over 50 years. She served as Sunday School Superintendent and taught the 5th and 6th grade Sunday School classes for many years, she also served as CWF Treasurer for nearly 40 years and held other leadership positions in CWF. Cecilia treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Her strength and gentle ways will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Cecilia is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 72 years Herbert Whitt, November 2007; sisters Margaret Jump and Christina Bennett and brother Nickolas Smith.
Cecilia is survived by sons, Larry Whitt and wife Sharon of Weston, Mo., Don Whitt and wife Nancy of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters, Betty Bashford and husband Connie of Cameron, Mo., Mary Campbell and husband Don of Chula Vista, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
