A little break in the weather and a lot of people decide it’s time to give their cars, pickups and, yes, even the big yellow school bus a bath — even if they have to keep their coat and gloves on to do it, like Gallatin R-5 bus driver Karla Michener in this picture.
According to the National Weather Service the average high temperature for our area in January is 35.8 degrees and the average low is 17.4 degrees. So far this month, our highest temperature was 67 on Jan. 7. Those springlike days were sorely missed, especially on Jan 19 and 20 when the temperature fell to well below zero, at an average of -4. Precipitation so far in January is .96 inches, according to Kirby Payne at the Daviess County Farm Service Agency. The average precipitation for January is .98, so we’re about .2 less than normal, but the month isn’t over. Total rainfall for last year was 40.44. The average for the year is 36.70, so we were a little over average in moisture for 2007. The National Weather forecast says the rest of the week will range from cold to bitterly cold until Saturday when the temperature will get up in the lower 40s. Then Sunday we’ll have a chance of flurries in the morning, then a chance of snow in the afternoon.
