Gallatin’s #2 seeded girls face #3 Lathrop tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 in the semifinal round of the Hamilton Tournament. Both teams come in with respectable records, but each would like to turn it up a notch after struggling, at times, in their openers.
Lathrop made it to the semifinal round with an eight-point victory over #6 Trenton. The Lady Mules jumped out to a 35-19 halftime lead but had to hold on tight despite accounting for five three-pointers in the contest.
Lathrop brings a 14-3 record into tonight’s tilt. The Lady Mules lost early to Orrick, a 10-2 team, but avenged that loss in their own tournament. Two losses to state-ranked and once-beaten North Platte, both in tournament finals, are the only other blemishes against Lathrop’s record.
The Lady Bulldogs sport losses to undefeated and state-ranked Hamilton and once-beaten Gilman City. The Lady Bulldogs also dropped a Lawson tournament semifinal game to the host team, which owns losses to Hamilton, Smithville, North Platte and Chillicothe.
Gallatin enters tonight’s contest perhaps without one of their leading scorers and playmakers. Courtney Ray injured an arm diving for a loose ball in the stands Monday night. Following an examination after the game at a local hospital, the arm was thought to be broken. Another exam Tuesday downgraded the injury to a severe bruise. Indications are she may miss a couple of games.
Gallatin started slowly against Maysville in Monday night’s opener, built more than a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but slacked off as the Lady Wolverines scored 14 unanswered points to close to within eight with under two minutes left.
The Lady Bulldogs notched only four points in the final 10 minutes of the contest, but came away 46-34 winners.
Top-seeded Hamilton takes on #4 South Harrison at 7:30 on Thursday in the other girls semifinal. Hamilton has faced few challenges thus far this season. South Harrison currently owns a seven-game winning streak following last night’s first round win over Richmond.
Trenton next for boys
Gallatin’s boys absorbed a 75-42 loss at the hands of top-seeded Richmond on Tuesday and will see #4 Trenton Thursday at 9 p.m. in the loser’s bracket semifinal round.
The Bulldogs turned in a better showing, particularly in the first half, than two weeks ago against the Spartans in the Lawson Tournament. Richmond took a 9-0 lead off the opening tip Tuesday night but Gallatin fought back to 11-8 before the end of the first period.
The Bulldogs were within 43-30 with four minutes to play in the third period, but a Spartan full-court press took its toll the rest of the way. Richmond hit the 5:00 mark of the fourth quarter with a 27-point lead, but continued to press the length of the floor.
Kayle Hefley led Gallatin wth 11 points, followed by Derrick Sprague with nine. Andy Ward, Jon Brown, Ben Adams and Mitch King each finished with eight.
