The community is invited to help Marie Toney celebrate her retirement from the Green Hills Community Action Agency from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at the service center building located on the corner of Clay and Jackson Streets in Gallatin.
Cake and punch will be served.
Marie Toney is retiring after 31 years of service with GHCAA. She said the best part of her job has been “working with the people” and the worst part has been ”the paperwork.”
“They’ve all been good years,” said Marie. This time of the year is her favorite. The agency’s Christmas Project is underway with the dispensing of toys and clothes and food and involves every age, from little ones to older folks, and “Brings out the best in people.”
Marie started working as the Daviess County Coordinator in October of 1976. Virginia Daniels was the director at that time. Still working for GHCAA Marie also worked with Recreational and Summer Youth from 1977-1979. In 1980 Marie made another career change and went to work in the Family Planning Department of GHCAA and was there for 12 years. In 1990, Marie became the director of the service center in Gallatin, where she has spent the last 17 years.
“What has made my job easier than other counties, is that everybody in the community works together,” said Marie. “Not every county is like that. Everybody made us look good.”
Marie put in her formal resignation the first of November, but really decided earlier this fall. “I just decided I would spend some time with my family.”
Marie has three sons, Damon, Darren and Davon, and grandchildren, Shelby, Shannon, Grant, Darick and Heavyn.
“I have never seen a more loved and respected person than Marie Toney,” said Phyllis Heckenbach, who has been the coordinator for the center for the last three-and-a-half years. “I’m sure she will be missed by the families she has served and the groups she has so kindly given her heart and time to.”
“I’ve always said if I don’t enjoy going to work, I need to quit,” said Marie. “I haven’t got to that point and I don’t want to get to that point.”
