Each October since Hannah was diagnosed in 2000, the family has been dedicated to raising funds for the JDRF, and have raised nearly $40,000 to date.
They credit their ongoing success to the generous donations of several local businesses, clubs, classmates, friends and family. They are very hopeful that someday the research dollars they are helping to raise will result in a cure for Hannah and all those living with diabetes.
Hannah’s health care routine involves pricking her finger five to six times each day to check her blood sugar. The only medication she requires is insulin, and in the past she took four to five injections per day.
Now she wears an insulin pump which is connected to her body by very small tubing and delivers the insulin to her body continuously. This more closely mimics how a healthy person’s pancreas works.
Hannah programs the pump to deliver boluses at mealtimes also. She must count all of the carbohydrates in her meals and snacks to calculate the mealtime dose.
Hannah was just five years old when she was diagnosed with diabetes. She is 13 years old now and feels like a “pro” at managing her diabetes. Her parents are very proud of how she has maintained a positive attitude.
