After taking on #4 ranked Marceline and #8 ranked Trenton in the opening week of the 2007-08 high school wrestling season, Gallatin’s varsity Bulldogs found out last Friday that there would be no break in sight during a grueling opening schedule.

"This was a tough tournament for us," said Bulldog wrestling coach Phillip Limb. "Some of our younger kids had rough days, but the first part of our schedule is tough for a reason," he advised. "Having the tough schedule at the beginning makes us better down the road when it comes to conference and districts."

Despite tough competition, Gallatin placed eight wrestlers in the top five of their respective weight classes.

Topping all GHS performances was Levi Michener’s first place finish in the 119-pound division. Sterling Steele and Jordan Phelps finished third, respectively, in the 103- and 215-pound classes.

Matt Atkinson, 152; Dale Curtis, 160; and Joe Lagodny, 285, wrestled to fourth place finishes. Andrew Hood, 140, and Jacob Smith, 171, each finished fifth.

Team finishes reflected the degree of difficulty that faced Bulldog grapplers in their quest for medals. Maryville squeaked out a first place finish ahead of Lexington, 114.5 to 114. Fulton finished third with 101 points, followed by Carrollton 90, Lathrop 73., Gallatin 70, Warsaw 60 and Mid-Buchanan 50.

Gallatin’s tough opening schedule continues this weekend. The Bulldogs travel to Trenton on Saturday for tournament action featuring four of the top ten teams in the state.
