Joseph S. Palmer, 93, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 at the Lake Viking Health Care Center in Gallatin.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the First Baptist Church in Gallatin. Family visitation was held Tuesday evening at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery near Gallatin. Memorial contributions can be made to the Gallatin First Baptist Church or the Lake Viking Church or Regional Care Hospice

Joe was born on July 24, 1914 at Palmer’s Point, New Brunswick, Canada. As the youngest of nine children he worked hard to help his parents, Beverly and Lina Poor (Wasson) Palmer, who were dairy farmers and commercial fishermen.

After high school graduation in Saint John, New Brunswick he enrolled at Wheaton College, using a student visa. He graduated from Wheaton College, with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degrees in Bible and Archaeology. Later he earned another Master of Arts degree in School Administration from the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Joe was married to Pearl Youngberg on V.J. Day on Aug. 14, 1945. They had four children; Kathy, Carolyn, Jim and Steve.

Joe and his wife Pearl, pastored churches in Illinois, Michigan and Iowa from 1945 –– 1956. In 1957, Joe, Pearl and their four children moved to Lansing, Ill., where Joe taught sixth grade for four years. He then served as an Elementary School Principal and Director of Special Education. When they retired in 1980 Joe and Pearl moved to an 80-acre farm near Altamont, Mo. Joe served as pastor of Lake Viking Church from 1983 –– 1992.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters, one brother, his beloved son, Jim and precious daughter, Kathy.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl Palmer, Gallatin; daughter, Carolyn Hartley and husband Chris of Emerald Isle, N.C., and son Steve Palmer and wife Liz of Plympton, Mass., one son-in-law Stan Hill of Billings, Mont., one daughter-in-law, Eileen Palmer of Isle of Palms, S.C., eight grandchildren, six step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of wonderful friends and relatives.

He went to be with his Lord on Nov. 2, 2007 at the age of 93. Be at peace my sweetheart and Dad. You have been a faithful servant.
