Gallatin man pleads guilty in child molestation case
The courthouse will be closed Nov. 12 for Veterans Day, as well as Nov. 22-23 in observance of Thanksgiving.
Circuit Court
Elbert L. Fry, Gallatin, plead guilty to two counts of child molestation 1st degree, class B felonies, in Livingston County Circuit Court on Oct. 18, on a change of venue from Daviess County. The case was heard by Judge James P. Valbracht. The court deferred its decision whether to accept or reject the plea recommendation until a sentence assessment report has been submitted. Sentencing was also deferred until that time.
Charles L. Anderson Jr. of New Virginia, Iowa, plead guilty Nov. 5 to DWI, alcohol, prior offender, class A misdemeanor, on a plea agreement. He was sentenced to 75 days in the Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail, with credit given for time served. On a second misdemeanor charge, operating vehicle without valid license, no action was taken. The case was heard by Judge Valbracht.
A dissolution of marriage was granted to Loretta Pratt from Clinton Pratt on Oct. 29, by Judge Valbracht.
A jury trial for Robert D. Canaday which had been scheduled for Oct. 30 was delayed until Feb. 14. He is charged with one count of felony non-support.
Criminal cases filed: State vs. Stephen P. Allen, Jamesport, two counts of non-support, class D felony; State vs. Crystal Lamm, King City, tampering with victim/witness in felony prosecution, class C felony, tampering with physical evidence, class D felony, endangering welfare of child in ritual/ceremony second degree, class D felony.
Sheriff’s Office
Vandalism was reported at the Pattonsburg school on Oct. 25, by Superintendent Sheryl Cornett. Graffiti had been written with a marker on the dome-shaped buildings which house the elementary school and the cafeteria.
Susan Hanna, 37, Trenton, was charged Nov. 3 with two counts of passing bad checks, class C felony. She posted $5,000 bond.
Edwin A. Bowman, 53, Jamesport, was arrested Nov. 4 on three felony charges, DWI, no valid license and possession of controlled substance. He is being held on $35,000 bond.
William G. Garrens Jr., 51, Gallatin, was arrested Nov. 4 for DWI, class D felony. He is being held on $35,000 bond.
Dennis Gripenberg, 41, Des Moines, Iowa, was arrested Nov. 2 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He posted $750 bond.
Lisa A. Smith, 44, Kansas City was charged Nov. 4 with failure to appear on a charge of possession of paraphernalia. She is being held on $1,000 bond.
County Commission
James Lewis, bridge supervisor, reported that they are continuing repairs on bridges and culverts. The handicap accessibility signs will be delivered to the polling places prior to the February 2008 election.
Kevin Heldenbrand, sheriff, met with the commission regarding staff and budget matters.
Jack Mooney, Senior Citizens Board, and Deanna Lewis, Active Aging Resource Center, met with the commission with information from a recent statewide meeting. The board is not yet complete, but plans are to be organized before year-end.
Bills were audited and paid.
Kyle McBroom met with the commission regarding problems with the heating system. Repairs will be made.
Dan Herrold, Washington Township, contacted the commission to report that a back wall had collapsed on a bridge on 240th Street. The bridge crew will make repairs.

Associate Circuit Court
Warrants have been issued and charges filed against Timothy J. Swanigan, Amy Berry of Trenton, and William R. Barnett of Gallatin, each on one felony count of theft/stealing.
Swanigan is accused of passing a $500 counterfeit check at the Colonial Rug & Broom Shop in Jamesport.
Berry is accused of cashing two insufficient funds checks which she wrote to herself while employed at Landes Oil; she also charged miscellaneous items totaling over $1,000 while employed there and has never paid for them.
Barnett allegedly sold a Harley Davidson motorcycle to Rick Schroller, claiming that there was no lien against the motorcycle. Schroller is unable to register the motorcycle due to a lien which is preventing him from becoming the registered owner.
Traffic Fines
The following are traffic cases which were heard in the Associate Division of the Circuit Court of Daviess County involving a plea of guilty without contest and payment by mail of the standard fine plus court costs. The total fines assessed for defendants who reside outside of Missouri was $2,348.50 for 29 tickets. The total fines assessed for defendants who reside in Missouri was $1,181 for 25 cases. Court costs collected for the State of Missouri amount to $56.50 for moving traffic violations. Missouri defendants, offenses and fines are listed below:
Amanda J. Toney, Gallatin, was fined $38.50 of each of two counts of failure to register vehicle annually, $103.50 on each of two counts of no insurance, and $10 for no seat belt.
