Once upon a time in a land far away, a King had three beautiful daughters. He was concerned about them; he wasn’t sure whether they loved him for himself, or for the inheritance.

So, the King called them into his throne-room, and asked each the question: "How much do you love me?" The oldest daughter replied: "Father, I love you more than all the silver and gold in the world." The middle daughter joined in: "Father, I love you more than all the precious jewels in the world." The youngest daughter took awhile to answer: "Father, I love you more than salt!"

The King thought about their answers. Finally he said: "My youngest daughter truly loves me the most! For, as valuable as gold and silver and precious jewels are, they can be lost or stolen and life will go on. We cannot live, however, without salt!"

SALT is essential to a healthy body and a well-rounded life! Salt is one of the elements our body requires to function well. Too much salt in our diet, or too little salt, leads to health-problems, creates an imbalance in our body. We need to maintain a healthy balance physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Salt is used to preserve the best in life. Without the proper amount of salt, food would spoil. Spoiled food becomes a health hazard, and must be thrown out.

Salt is a seasoning. Food tastes better and has more flavor when salt/seasoning is added. Food, without any seasoning, is bland and tasteless.

Salt, in ancient times, was a valuable commodity! It was not readily available. Salt had to be mined, refined, and carried via caravans traveling many miles for weeks on end.

Salt is one of the myriad of gifts God gives us to enrich our daily lives! Salt is essential to life; we dare not take salt, or life, for granted!

Jesus came and lived among us. He is our salt! Jesus Christ is essential to a healthy life! He preserves all that is good in life: goodness, honesty, integrity, right living, love, peace, gladness and joy, satisfaction, a cooperative spirit, forgiveness and mercy, and hope. Jesus Christ seasons our lives with Heavenly blessings; because of Him, life has a delicious flavor – life tastes great!

We are to carry on Jesus’ work in this world! We are to live like salt. We are to uphold all that is Godly; we are to trash every thought, word, and deed that is un-Godly! We are to live life as God designed life to be: rich, full, abundant, satisfying, rewarding, joy-full, worth the living.

Henry Van Dyke puts it this way: "You may have to live in a crowd, but you do not have to live like it…"

That’s what it means to be Christ-like in an un-Christian society! Thank God for salt!
