After months of working on Ordinances and Procedures for animal control, negotiating contracts for an animal control officer and a place to hold dogs in an animal shelter, the Village of Winston has just about cleared its streets of stray dogs, making way for residents to enjoy walking in the beautiful fall weather.
According to Lucille Lusk, policy coordinator, Winston contracted with an animal control officer, Tina Tindle, to come as needed, and she has picked up 22 dogs that were at large without a valid rabies tag.
Most of the dogs picked up were strays to which no one claimed ownership. Several were part of a roving dog pack which has been a concern for some time. A few were later identified as belonging to a resident, most of whom claimed the dog by obtaining a rabies vaccination and paying the costs of impoundment; or by proving the existence of a current rabies vaccination, placing the tag on the dog’s collar and paying the costs.
The vast majority of the dogs that were not claimed by owners have been placed with animal adoption agencies which spay or neuter the dogs, give them appropriate care and vaccinations, and place them with caring owners.
