Gallatin R-5 golfers head to Stanberry next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. tee-off time to start the 2007 season. Seven golfers return from last year’s team, including four who played at the varsity level.
Senior Kathryn Everly is a back-to-back state qualifier and figures to be one of the squad’s leading golfers. Junior Sydney Elbert is a returning state qualifier who has put in a lot to time on the course this year, and should be much improved.
Juniors Alex Burge and Kelly Critten performed well at times at the varsity level last season and should benefit from a year’s experience. Seniors Shalyn Lollar and Sarah Cornett return for their fourth seasons and will compete for a fifth varsity spot.
Sophomore Sarah Smith competed at the junior varsity level a year ago and has shown improvement in early practices. Freshman Bailey Bozarth, a first-year golfer, has continues to improve her game.
Lady Bulldog coach Chris Elbert offers his assessment of the upcoming season: "Once again, Worth County looks like the team to beat in conference play," he said. "We hope to improve as the season goes on and compete for one of the top spots in conference and district tournaments, if we can get our girls playing well consistently."
Gallatin travels to Orrick for tournament play on Aug. 24 before coming home on Aug. 27 to face Lawson at Daviess County Country Club.
