A Ridgeway man drove a 1992 Volvo refuse truck off a bridge that was under construction on Hwy. 13 about three miles north of Jameson at about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The accident occurred as Steve Wallen, 32, was northbound on the highway and traveled onto a bridge that was under construction and marked "closed" by road signs. Mr. Wallen’s refuse truck struck a backhoe which was stationary on the bridge. The truck traveled off the west side of the bridge, overturning, and landing on its top in the water. The backhoe fell of the east side of the bridge and landed on its side in the water.
Mr. Wallen was taken to Cameron Regional Medical Center by Daviess County Ambulance with minor injuries. He was wearing his seat belt.
The refuse truck was totaled and towed by Bridgeman’s of Altamont. The backhoe, which was owned by Cramer and Associates out of Des Moines, Iowa, was extensively damaged.
The accident was investigated Tpr. Jonathon P. Lynch, assisted by Sgt. Mark Ott, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, the Daviess County Ambulance and Jameson Fire Department.
