This summer two local high-achieving elementary school students took part in the National Young Scholars Program (NYSP). Ryan Warren, daughter of Todd and Kelly Warren, and Aubrey Nelson, daughter of Bill and Vera Nelson, attended the week long program this July. Both girls recently completed the fourth grade at Covel D. Searcy Elementary in Gallatin. Ryan and Aubrey were nominated for this program by fourth grade teacher Tara Burns. NYSP was held at the University Plaza Conference Center in DeKalb, Ill.
Throughout the program, young scholars engage in challenging course work, gain a greater sense of independence and experience a renaissance of learning. Ryan and Aubrey interacted with over 400 other scholars from the Midwest. The program culminates with student-created projects tying in leadership skills learned with the discoveries made in their specific area of study.
Ryan and Aubrey chose the discovery strand CSI #1 in which activities such as illustrating and dramatizing and solving a “whodunit” through work in a model forensic lab are just a few highlights of the innovative curriculum.
