Aubrey Nelson, daughter of Bill and Vera Nelson of Gallatin, recently participated in the Harley Davidson-sponsored National 4-H Talent Review in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Aubrey was one of 14 acts selected out of approximately 65 auditions from around the country for this prestigious honor. Aubrey was given the opportunity to audition through Becky Simpson, the University of Missouri County Extension Specialist.
Audition tapes were submitted in December and selected by Nation Review Council in March. To win her spot, Aubrey had to compete with many talented students with various backgrounds, including singers, Irish dancers, pianists, martial arts experts and flautists. While in Michigan, Aubrey enjoyed 4-H sponsored pizza and Luau parties with the other participants, made many new 4-H friends, and visited exciting places, including the President Gerald Ford Museum.
Aubrey’s four-day experience included 2 ½ days of 26 hours of rehearsals for numbers performed at the National Talent Review Gala at the DeVos Performing Center in Grand Rapids, Mich. These included an opening number "Bad to the Bone" and a closing number "Life is a Highway," choreographed by dance team members at the University of South Carolina, as well as Aubrey’s wining musical theater solo "Kansas City."
Members of the National Ag Council, family members, and guests were among the approximately 1,000 people in attendance at the gala. In addition to the country and western disc jockey emcees from B93, the audience honored the participants with rousing applause and a standing ovation at the end of the performance.
Aubrey is a member of the Daviess County Knee-Hi 4-H Club in Gallatin, under the leadership of Alicia Chrisman.
