The 2006 Gallatin Bulldogs were able to experience the excitement surrounding a trip to the Missouri Class 1 semifinals last November.
The 2007 Gallatin Bulldogs will grab their share of the limelight right out of the starting gate when they take part in a once-in-a-lifetime day of events honoring one of the area’s most celebrated professional athletes.
King City R-1 School, in conjunction with Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, will honor NFL Hall of Famer and King City alumnus Roger Wehrli on Saturday, Sept. 8, in a special football event at Spratt Stadium on the MWSU campus.
"Roger Wehrli Day" will feature back-to-back high school football games, beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. with a rivalry matchup of Gallatin vs. Braymer.
A special ceremony honoring Wehrli will follow at approximately 2 p.m., during which Wehrli will be present to receive recognition from the assembled crowd.
The second featured match-up, a Grand River Conference clash between Hamilton and King City, will begin at 2:45 p.m.
The gate will open at 10:30 a.m. Admission for the day’s events will be $8 for adults and $5 for students and young children.
A limited supply of coins commemorating the event, featuring Wehrli’s likeness on one side and a list of the former All-Pro defensive back’s various Hall of Fame inductions on the other side, will be available for purchase.
Wehrli’s football accolades at the University of Missouri and St. Louis Cardinals followed a high school career at King City, where he received countless post-season honors in football, basketball and track.
Wehrli, who received the last football scholarship handed out by MU Coach Dan Devine in 1965, was twice an All-Big 8 player and was the Big 8 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. That same year, he was a unanimous All-America selection.
He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003, and on Aug. 4, 2007 will become just the second Missouri player (Kellen Winslow) to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Joining him in the 2007 HOF class will be wide receiver Michael Irvin, running back Thurman Thomas, offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, tight end Charlie Sanders and offensive guard Gene Hickerson.
Wehrli was a a first round pick of the Cardinals in 1969 (19th overall) and was named to seven Pro Bowls in 14 professional seasons in the NFL. He was named to the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team, joining such defensive notables as Jack Lambert, Dick Butkus, Bobby Bell, Larry Wilson, Joe Greene, Bob Lilly and Merlin Olsen.
Wehrli currently resides in St. Charles, Missouri, along with his wife, Gayle.
