Vandalism to the bathrooms in Dockery Park have been an ongoing issue for the Gallatin Park Board.

In May the bathrooms had a water leak and a broken urinal. Faucets were also broken at the livestock barn. The board voted to fix these issues, but by June the bathroom situation had worsened. The restrooms at the upper field were badly damaged and the water had to be turned off. The board voted to rent two port-a-potties for each ballfield. Plans for a combination bathroom/concession stand will be discussed in more detail at the July meeting.
Chemical options for the pond have been discussed and an aquatic biologist, Shawn Banks, was consulted. He surveyed the pond and reported the problem is not lily pads but American Lotus. Two sprayings would be needed to remove the Lotus and each spraying would be $600. The board voted to purchase the chemicals and is currently working on spraying the pond.
Four Eagle Scout projects involve the park: Steven Wood – bathroom project; Mitchell King – RV areas; Bradley Jones – cargo nets and play area; Myrick McLey – landscaping and a new sign.
Several events are upcoming at the park. Vicki Corwin spoke on behalf of the Band Boosters. They would like to have the concession stands for the End of Season Adult League Tournament Aug. 10, to raise money for an upcoming band trip. The board voted to allow the use of the concession by the Band Boosters. Bob Robertson will be having a baseball tournament on July 27-29. It will also be an adult tournament to raise money for the Gallatin Band and their trip to the Cotton Bowl.
Clint Vanatta requested the use of the ball fields and concession stands for Aug. 18. BTC Bank will host a softball tournament for Relay for Life. The board voted to allow the use.
Administrator Zac Johnson and Mayor Barb Ballew were present at a special meeting in June to tell the board that a worker paid by Green Hills is available for the park. The board voted to allow the young man to work in the park.
Board members passed a motion for the construction of a walking trail to go out for bids during the regular June meeting. The walking trail will be through the actual play area so children can be watched as adults walk. The Daviess County Health Department has applied for the Hamburger Helper Grant for the walking trail.
In other business, a new lawn mower battery will be purchased. Mike Huffman’s letter of resignation was read and accepted by the board. The board voted to keep the current officers for the next year.
The above are the unapproved minutes for the June meeting of the Gallatin Park Board. Members present were Terri Wright, David McLey, DeAnna Swalley, Bob Robertson, Alan Bradford and Mike Butcher.
In a meeting held earlier in the year, Bob Robertson had a 15 by 15 storage shed he would donate to the park if the board would move it. The board motioned to move the shed.
The skate park grant application was discussed. The application was submitted to the city administrator.
William Griffin was awarded the bid for mowing the park.
The board voted to purchase a post to block the old road through the park.
Issues with building rental were voiced. Repeat renters are leaving items in the refrigerator. A new sign will be made for the refrigerator stating that all items must be removed.
Purchasing a live Christmas tree that would one day be the Mayor’s Christmas Tree was discussed. The board will look for trees and check prices on the different sizes and styles. The Mayor’s tree has been tabled lately, but the board would still like to plant one instead of cutting one every year.
