Over 100 years of collecting has gone into Al’s Antiques, a new store that recently opened in Pattonsburg. The name comes from three groups of Als represented by its owners: Allen and Bonnie McFall; Alan and Linda Goodwin; and Allen Hutchinson.

All but one of the members grew up in Pattonsburg (Alan Goodwin is from Martinsville), graduated from its high school, and then left to pursue careers and raise their families. Now all have since retired from their professions and chose Pattonsburg, their home town, to open their shop and share their collections.
Al’s Antiques, located on Main Street in Pattonsburg, features over 80 different styles of kerosene and Aladdin lamps; cowboy memorabilia, like Hop-A-Long Cassidy; old toys, including vintage pedal cars and tractors; farm memorabilia; oil memorabilia; kitchen collectibles; furniture; and advertising posters and signs.
The McFalls, Goodwins and Mr. Hutchinson have been collecting over the years and together have accumulated a number of unusual items not to be found in ordinary stores.
“Our kids helped us decide that maybe it was time to part with some of it,” said Bonnie.
Allen Hutchinson also owns Blue Light Antiques at Pattonsburg, located a half mile north of the gas station.
“Since I live here in town, I’m always available to help the customers,” he said.
Blue Light Antiques also features a wide variety of lamps, for a total between the two stores of at least 160 lamps to choose from.
“I’ve studied my lamps and I can hang in with the best of them,” Mr. Hutchinson said.
He added that each member of the group of advanced collectors has their own expertise. For instance, Linda Goodwin knows her antique toys, especially Hop-a-Long Cassidy and Roy Rogers.
Al’s Antiques has been open a couple of weeks, while they moved, arranged and priced the antiques.
The store is now open seven days a week, Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A grand opening will be held on July 14, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with refreshments and door prizes.
“Al’s Antiques offers something for everyone,” said Bonnie. “We continue to add to the store’s merchandise.”
