"Repairing city and rural mailboxes improves the appearance of the community and makes delivering and receiving mail safer for postal carriers and customers," said Gallatin Postmaster Carl Wiles.

As the summer months arrive, patrons are encouraged to inspect and repair the condition of their mailbox and make improvements as needed.

Some typical activities that may need to be done include: painting to prevent rust; securing the box to a post or stand; 9-1-1 address or house numbers.

Customers may consult the Gallatin Post Office with any questions or concerns regarding mailbox requirements by calling 660-663-3312.

The Gallatin Post office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Mailboxes are protected by federal law and crimes against them and the mail they contain are considered a federal offense. Violators can be fined or imprisoned for each act of vandalism.

Information on mailbox vandalism or mail theft should be reported to the local post office or the to the Postal Inspection Service at 1-800-ASK-USPS.
