Dear Editor:
In 1960 we had 160 million people, now we have about 350 million. Back then most working class had one car.

All the gas stations were leased from oil company’s, except for those, like my dad, who owned the building. I worked there part time. My dad was there 43 years.
Since 1960 we have less than half the number of refineries and the oil companies found out they could control prices since only five companies still exist. They control the supply and they worked for years with auto manufacturers to make sure there was a large demand.
President Nixon in 1972 told us to expect to pay $1 a year within a year. Three weeks later investigators were sent into Kansas City to see why prices were so low. Within six months we were paying 50 cents a gallon. I was buying gas for 17 9/10 cents a gallon before, and we had two refineries, both gone now.
Our government spent 50 million in the 1970s to break up Ma Bell, said it had too much control. I found out the justice department had lots of lawyers with nothing to do so they got after the best phone company we ever had.
In 1971 we were first in transportation, communications and education. In 1983 it was reported that we had dropped to 17th and 27th and in 2006 it was reported our education was 24th.
Is this what you want?
Richard L. Morgan,
Gallatin
