Over 60 spring athletes earned the spotlight at last Tuesday night’s Spring Sports Recognition Night at Gallatin High School.
Chris Elbert introduced junior varsity and varsity golfers. The Bulldog junior varsity fielded a highly competitive team that finished 6-3 in meets and second in the conference jayvee tournament. Eleven of the 17 GHS golf team members were either freshmen or sophomores.
The varsity golf team finished 9-6 overall and second in the GRC tournament. One of the best meets of the season came with a sixth place finish of 21 teams in the Sedalia Sacred Heart Tournament.
Members of the 2007 boys golf team were: Bryce Carder, Ryan Chadwick, Kevin Corwin, Alex Critten, Shay Esbeck, Ethan Merrigan, Brandon Meseberg, Levi Michener, Jason Moore, Derrick McBroom, Matt Pottorff, Robert Rhoades, Andy Ward, Vince Wiley, Ross Wood, Terrill Wood and Jon Youd.
McBroom, who finished 9th in conference, 13th at district and 35th at state, was named most valuable golfer. Michener was recognized as having the lowest scoring average for a first-year player.
It was a rewarding season for 22 girls participating in varsity track and field. Coach Martin Sweatman recognized the following with special awards and comments:
Ashley Owens, rookie of the year; Courtney Ray, hardest worker; Casey Sweatman, relay high point scorer; 4×100-meter relay team of Owens, Maggie Strange, Kelly Critten and Molly Lowe for a school-record time of 53.86; 4×800-meter relay team of Sweatman, Ray, Kaddie Mott and Ashley Beck for a sectional championship and 4th place finish at state; and Critten as high individual point scorer for the season.
Also recognized for their contributions were: Frankie Bass, Jamie Brinnen, Savannah Butcher, Megan Chadwick, Nicole Everman, Addey Gann, Tarah Gutzmer, Amber Hogan, Chelsey Smith, Sarah Smith, Elizabeth Thomas, Wren Tolen, Carey Uthe, Marquis Wheeler and manager Tye Humphrey.
Mark Cole’s 25-member boys track team turned in several top five team finishes this season while battling injuries, weather and meet cancellations.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Derrick Teel, Stephen Wood, Derrick Love and Corey Lee was recognized for setting a new school record 46.76. The 4×800-meter relay team of Ben Adams, Kevin Chadwick, Kayle Hefley and Mitch King drew praise for a first place finish and district and sectional, and 8th place finish at state.
Tyler Brackett received the award for newcomer of the year. King was cited as most improved. Teel was the coach’s award, and Hefley, who shared top scoring honors for the season with Chadwick, was named most valuable athlete on the team.
Other team members introduced were: Matt Atkinson, Jon Brown, Nic Burrell, Kyle Croy, Lee Deutschmann, Nathan Gann, Jacob Gienapp, Paul Hickey, Billy Kerns, Cody Selby, Colton Selby, Jacob Smith, Derrick Sprague, Antone Steele, Tyler Toney, Cody Walton and manager Taylor Porter.
Special awards were announced at the program’s conclusion. Recognized as National Student/Athletes were: Colt Bohannon, Nic Burrell, Courtney Ray, Logan Corwin, Samantha Mott, Emily Michener, Brett Wilkinson, Ayrica Batson, Andy Ward and Kathryn Everly.
Three-sport athletes for the 2006-07 school year included: Matt Atkinson, Tyler Bracket, Samantha Butcher, Jason Moore, Ashley Owens, Colton Selby, Terrill Wood, Kelly Critten, Kyle Croy, Nathan Gann, Kayle Hefley, Courtney Ray, Robert Rhoades, Derrick Sprague, Maggie Strange, Derrick Teel, Wren Tolen, Tyler Toney, Jon Brown, Cody Selby, Jacob Smith, Andy Ward and Nic Burrell.
Winners of the MSHSAA Award of Excellence were Brett Wilkinson and Samantha Mott. Distinguished Athlete awards went to Alyssa Strein and Andrew Adkison. Scholar/athlete awards went to Ayrica Batson and Nic Burrell.
Refreshments were served following the awards assembly.
