Sarah Dowell has taken on the Whitt Cemetery as her master gardener project this year and is hoping that someone has the plotting information for this resting place of several of the area’s earliest settlers.

"It is now up to this generation to honor this little cemetery by keeping it well maintained," said Sarah. "Literally hundreds of people in Daviess County have roots going back to Elijah Whitt."

Elijah came into Daviess County from Lexington, Ken., in the early 1800’s, settling in Monroe Township. Whitt Cemetery was established in 1844.

The cemetery has a new board organized to oversee its care, made up of all Whitt relatives, namely, Jared Whitt, Gary Heldenbrand, Trent Dowell, Cindy Burton, Sarah Dowell and Lois Swofford.

Dale Cox for many years gave of his time to keep the cemetery mowed and now his son Dale Wayne Cox continues this generous tradition.

A new name marker has been placed along Hwy. 13 to direct visitors to the proper turnoff to the cemetery, located about four miles south of Gallatin.

Anyone with plotting information about the cemetery should contact one of the board members. If you would like to help maintain the cemetery, a cash donation may be sent to Lois Swofford, treasurer, 1401 Talon Dr., Cameron, MO 64429.
