The Trenton Acting Guild is inviting anyone who wants to participate in the Sesquicentennial play this summer to come to a meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, in the music building on the Trenton High School campus.
Singers, musicians, actors, and dancers are needed for the play, which will be tailored to suit their particular talents. There will be opportunities for solos, duets, trios, and group numbers.
Music from a variety of types of music – gospel, pop, rock ‘n roll, country western, etc. – from different eras, will likely be used including vocal and instrumental. People are encouraged to come with ideas about what they would like to sing, dance, or play for the show. This is not an audition but is a general meeting to get an idea of community interest in the show. Performers need to have completed the third grade.
The framework of the play is the story of two elderly women who are waiting in the Rock Island Station in June 1957, Trenton’s centennial year. Maude and Essie, who have appeared in previous TAG variety shows, will provide the comedy that connects the various musical acts.
Some of the possible plot points include a visit by a famous singer who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, a time machine, and children waiting for their parents to return to Trenton on the train. Bits of culture from the 1950s and pieces of Trenton history will be included.
The play will be presented at the Hoover Theatre during the Sesquicentennial Celebration planned for the Fourth of July weekend. Rehearsals will be held starting in June.
People interested in costuming, set design and construction, lights and sound and other backstage activities are also needed. They are also invited to attend on May 22. Those who cannot attend the Tuesday meeting, but who wish to participate or those who have questions about the show, should call Dr. Vicki Wheeler at 359-6229.
