1920-2007

GALLATIN, MO

Mary Ellen Barker, 86, of Lake Viking, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 16, 2007, at the Lake Viking Care Center surrounded by her family.

She was born May 1, 1920, on a farm southwest of Winston, Missouri to Harry and Ella May (Carson) Uthe. Mary Ellen married Sam Baker on July 11, 1945. They later divorced. She then married George Martin Barker on Nov. 22, 1956, in Cameron. He passed away Aug. 30, 1989, after 33 years of marriage. Her parents and one brother, Ralph, preceded Mary Ellen in death.

She worked at Montgomery Ward in Kansas City and then the Farmers State Bank in Cameron and taught in area schools around Winston, Liberty, and Cameron. She started as clerk in the United States Postal Service in Winston, Missouri and later became postmaster until retirement on Oct. 2, 1992, after 27 years of service.

Mary Ellen accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 14. She became a member of the Winston Baptist Church in 1957, where she was their organist for over 40 years. Mary Ellen was involved with the Winston Ministerial Alliance. In addition, she traveled to Colorado, in July of 2006, on the Harrison Baptist Association Family Mission Trip, at the age of 86. She was also a member of the Gallatin American Business Woman’s Association where she was their longest active member.

She loved her family and the pontoon rides with them on the lake where she lived. She looked forward to the holiday seasons and times when the family could gather for picnics on the lake.

Mary Ellen is survived by four sons, James Baker and wife, Janet of Fort Collins, Colorado; Ron Baker and wife, Lydia of Stockdale, Texas; David Barker and wife, Sheri of Ankeny Iowa; and Roger Barker and wife, Cindy of Altamont, Missouri; one daughter, Sylvia Burton and husband Terry of Sullivan, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jamie, Yvette, Amy, Michael, Cassie, Hannah, Jocelyn and Amanda; 11 great-grandchildren, Alleah, Kaelan, Boenn, Ciara, Gilbert Joe, Faith, Adam, Allison, Alissa, Shelby Jo and Brandon.

Visitation will be held Friday evening April 20, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stroup Mortuary in Winston. Funeral services will be Saturday April 21, 2007 at the Winston Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Any memorial wishes may be made to Winston Baptist Church.
