Riley Rains, a senior at Gallatin R-5, recently signed a letter of intent to attend William Jewell College in Liberty, where he will major in pre-med and play football next fall for the WJC Cardinals.

"We’ve been recruiting him all year," said WJC head football coach Fran Schwenk after last Thursday’s signing. "I couldn’t have been happier when we were able to get a scholarship put together for him," he added.

Rains, who earned 2006 all-conference honors for the Bulldogs, will likely suit up as a receiver or outside linebacker, Coach Schwenk said.

"We want him to be where he is most comfortable," Schwenk advised. "He is such an intelligent young man, very coachable, and that’s a quality that we really like to hang our hat on," he added.

William Jewell College competes in NAIA athletics and the Heart of America Conference, which has long been considered one of the best NAIA conferences in the nation.

Present at Thursday’s ceremony were Riley’s parents, David and Julie Rains, GHS head football coach Mark Cole, and Coach Schwenk.
