Owens’s last ditch trey sends MHS girls to first GRC loss
Vs. Maysville, Come-from-behind Victory!
After missing ten straight three-point shots over the course of nearly four quarters, Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs decided to put their last long-range attempt where it would do the most good.
Ashley Owens took an in-bounds pass from Ayrica Batson in front of Gallatin’s bench, turned and nailed a trey with two seconds left to lift the Lady Bulldogs to a 44-41, come-from-behind victory over Maysville Tuesday night in Grand River Conference play.
The Lady Wolverines, who absorbed their first conference loss, led by as many as 11 points late in the third period before Gallatin gained its first lead with a 10-0 run. Batson put back a missed shot at the 2:06 mark to give the Lady Bulldogs a 39-38 advantage, but Vanessa Gaiser popped in a pair of free throws to swing the lead back to the Lady Wolverines.
Kelsha Bundy scored from the low post and Gallatin led for the second time. Andi Gaiser hit only one of a two-shot foul to tie the game.
Maysville, under the bonus limit, spent a pair of fouls to slow the GHS attack, and Gallatin called a time out to set up the game-winning sequence. Brooke Ebersold tossed the in-bounds pass to Jenni Webber following Owens’ shot but the Lady Wolverines couldn’t get a shot off from the half-court line.
Maysville leaped to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter by forcing the action on both ends of the floor. Gallatin pulled to within 19-15 with the line of Batson, Courtney Ray, Casey Sweatman, Maggie Strange and Shelby Chadwick playing the best ball of the half.
The Lady Wolverines pulled out to a 30-19 lead in the third quarter when Andi Gaiser nailed her fourth trey of the night and Webber popped in one of her own. Wren Tolen helped lead the GHS turnaround in the second half by scoring all 11 of her team-leading points over that stretch. She also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Batson finished with nine points, three assists and three steals. Bundy scored eight and chalked up 10 rebounds. Owens finished with eight points.
The Lady Bulldogs, 14-5 overall and 3-2 in league play, will keep trying to fight their way up the GRC ladder on Thursday when they head to Polo for a makeup date against the league’s newest members. Friday night Gallatin travels to South Harrison, and the Lady Dogs head to Trenton’s Ketcham Center next Tuesday to take on the Princeton.
