Tax season is once again upon us and Green Hills Community Action Agency is offering its service as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. This service will be available beginning Jan. 29.
VITA sites offer free assistance to those with low-to-moderate incomes, including persons with disabilities and older taxpayers. Our Volunteer Tax Assistors assist in the claiming of Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) as well as the Senior Missouri Property Tax Credit (MOPTC).
Community members who visit a Volunteer Tax Site for simple tax returns should bring this year’s tax package, wage and earnings statement (Form W-2) from all employers, interest statements from banks (Form 1099), a copy of last year’s tax return if available, and other relevant information about income and expenses.
Elderly or disabled community members who would like to file for the MOPTC should bring their current paid tax receipts (both County and City) or their rent receipts for the past year as well as documentation of income such as Social Security 1099s and yearly pension statements.
Volunteer Tax Assistors must complete an IRS training and certification course in basic income tax return preparation before they can assist customers.
For more information contact your local GHCAA county office or call 660-359-3907.
