Dogs roll past Hornets and move to 3-0 in GRC

Gallatin’s boys started slow but gained momentum on their way to a 66-42 Grand River Conference win over rival Hamilton on Tuesday.

With the win, the Bulldogs maintained a share of the conference lead (3-0) and improved to12-3 overall heading into a crucial stretch of games against King City on Friday, and Maysville next Tuesday. Gallatin travels to Polo one week from Thursday to make up the Jan. 16 game cancelled due to inclement weather. The Bulldogs head to South Harrison the next night for an always anticipated showdown of GRC muscle teams.

Gallatin broke on top, 14-10, in the first quarter with a pair of starters on the bench. Nic Burrell and Colt Bohannon did not start after being unavoidably late for a practice when they both travelled to Truman State University to explore football options there. The game turned decidedly in Gallatin’s favor when both entered the fray in the second period.

Using an effective full-court press, the Bulldogs swept to a 36-19 advantage at the halftime break. Hornet sophomore Jon Pickrell hit his team’s first eight points of the third quarter in an attempt to keep it close, but by the time Brett Wilkinson converted a three-point play (FG, FT) at the 1:56 mark of the third, Gallatin led by a 49-29 spread.

Andrew Adkison finished with a game-high 28 points for Gallatin. Burrell chipped in 14 and Wilkinson contributed 13. Andy Ward also had seven for the Bulldogs.

Pickrell led the Hornets with 20 points, including 10 in the first quarter.
