Memorial services for Dallas Backer were held Monday, Jan. 22, at United Methodist Church in Hamilton. Cremation was completed. Inurnment was at St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery, Belmond, Iowa. Arrangements were by Bram Funeral Home, Hamilton.
Dallas W. Backer, 49, Hamilton, formerly of Altamont, died Jan. 17, 2007.
Mr. Backer was born on April 12, 1957, in Yuba City, Calif. He grew up in a military family and after his stepfather retired, the family moved to Allison, Iowa. He grew up in Allison and graduated from Allison-Bristow High School in 1976.
After graduation, Mr. Backer went into the Army National Guard where he was trained as a medic. He worked as an orderly in the hospital in Hampton, Iowa.
He married Sonja Nelson on June 18, 1977.
Since his marriage, he has lived in Hampton, Iowa; Rockwell, Iowa, Clear Lake, Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Lake Mills, Iowa, Altamont, and Hamilton.
He graduated from North Iowa Community College in Mason City, Iowa, with an associate degree. He attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
He taught at Mirabile for six years. While there, he earned his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He taught the last 13 years at Pitcher Elementary School in Kansas City as a fourth grade teacher.
Survivors include his wife, Sonja; two daughters, Melissa and Solveig; one son, Ben; his mother, Berniece Fuls; two sisters, Shari Ross and Inez Jean; and two brothers, Charles and Virgil.
