"The Emergency Department is on the front-lines of caring for the children in our community and we’re proud to have this national recognition as one of the best," says Randall E O’Donnell, PhD, president and CEO of Children’s Mercy. "Our doctors and nurses – in fact, all our employees – are dedicated to providing the highest quality care for our patients and their families.

"This ranking by Child magazine validates our standing among the nation’s best children’s hospitals, but we are always striving to do better."

Children’s Mercy overall was ranked 17th in the survey published in the February issue of the magazine, available today. Its emergency department was singled out as one of the top five best.

An extensive survey was sent to 116 members of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, the largest number ever to receive it. The survey examined vital medical information including survival rates, the number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries conducted, volume of research studies, efforts to reduce medical errors and the quality and training of the doctors and nurses as well as child-friendliness, support for families, and community involvement.

Child magazine surveys children’s hospitals every two years to produce its rankings.
