Bulldog wrestlers impressive at Marshall Tournament
Gallatin’s young wrestling squad continues to earn its chops, especially after turning in some outstanding performances against Class 2 and 3 opponents at Saturday’s Marshall Tournament.
"I was happy with the outcome for the tournament," GHS head wrestling coach Phillip Limb said. "We were missing two of our seniors, which were seeded, and could have made a huge difference in the overall point standings," he added. "It was great to see bigger schools that we won’t compete against the rest of the year."
Freshman Levi Michener continues to impress his coach and opposing wrestlers. "Levi beat a Jefferson City Helias kid who was 18-0 at the time," said Coach Limb. "This was a great match that Levi won, 7-6," he added.
Michener gutted his way through the championship match against freshman Nick Shea, who entered the tournament as the fifth-ranked wrestler in the Class 3, 103-pound weight class.
Bulldog sophomore Cody Selby fared equally as well as Michener. Selby pinned his way to a first place finish in the 140-pound class, beating Warrensburg’s Dexter Lewis for the title.
Junior Dale Curtis pinned Tyler Reinsch of Helias to finish third in the 152-pound weight class. Curtis lost only to eventual champ Brian Bergstrom of Marshall, one of the top wrestlers in his class.
Eight other Bulldog wrestlers came home with top six finishes, including: Bradley Jones, 4th at 215; Terrill Wood, 6th at 112; Nathan Gann, 5th at 119; Casey Alden, 5th at 125; Matt Atkinson, 6th at 130; Kyle Croy, 6th at 135; Andrew Hood, 6th at 145; and Billy Kerns, 5th at 171.
Riley Rains, Ryan Hicks and Logan Corwin did not wrestle for Gallatin on Saturday.
