2006-07 Basketball: Gallatin vs. Trenton

Gallatin varsity basketball teams finished up pre-holiday schedules last Friday night, and enter the long break having played about as well as possible through the early third of their schedules.

Gallatin’s now unranked girls take a 6-1 record into January. The only Lady Bulldog loss came to Hamilton in the championship game of the Gallatin Invitational.

Gallatin’s boys moved to 6-0 with their latest win against Trenton. The Bulldogs own a #5 ranking in Class 2 this week.

Lady Bulldogs survive scare

The Lady Bulldogs survived a second-half scare and defeated Trenton, 60-54, behind a combined 33 points from their starting guards. Gallatin used full-court pressure and four treys to build a 33-16 advantage at intermission, but Trenton found a rhythm in the second half and pulled to within three points late in the game.

Courtney Ray sparked Gallatin with 21 points. Wren Tolen chipped in 14. Point guard Ashley Owens contributed 12 points. Ayrica Batson scored seven points and dished out five assists. Kelsha Bundy tossed in six points to go with a team-high nine boards.

Aimee Gutshall led Trenton with 19 points. Trisha Ireland scored 14 of her 15 counters in the second half.

Bulldogs never trailed

The Bulldogs jumped out in front early in transition and never trailed in their 67-50 victory over Trenton. Gallatin led, 20-10, at the end of the first period, and 34-16 at the break.

Nic Burrell and Andrew Adkison each scored 17 points for Gallatin. Brett Wilkinson added 10. The Bulldogs shot 11 for 12 from the free throw line, including 8 of 8 from Burrell.

GHS teams return to action at home on Jan. 2 against Pattonsburg. Seeds for the Jan. 8-13 Lawson Invitational Tournament have been determined. Gallatin’s girls are seeded third and will play #6 Richmond in the tournament’s opening game. The GHS boys are the #4 seed and will face #5 Lexington in a Tuesday game.

Hamilton’s girls and Lawson’s boys are the tournament’s top seeds.
