A couple of Missouri newspapers have reported this scam recently. It’s called "Secret Shopper" or some other "work at home" or easy money deal.
The scammer will place a classified ad in the newspaper. Readers who respond to the ad will be sent a check – $3,200 in one case. The instructions are for the person to deposit the check in his or her checking account, then test the money wiring service at the local Wal Mart store by wiring $2,800 to the company that sent the check. The person can keep the rest of the money.
The check is phony, and anyone who wires money to the company will be out that amount of cash.
Be alert always for deals like this. Don’t help scammers steal your money. If you have any questions about an offer, check with your bank, the Better Business Bureau at www.kansascity.bbb.org or 816-421-7800 or the state Attorney General’s Office at www.ago.mo.gov.
