Gallatin’s young wrestling team acquitted itself well in tournaments at Lexington and Polo high schools, and turned in some quality matches for this early in the season.
"We had a really good showing at this tournament," said Bulldog wrestling coach Phillip Limb. "Some of the second-year wrestlers are starting to see the benefits of experience in wrestling," he added. "We were missing four wrestlers for different reasons, but I was really pleased with our success on the day."
Medals were awarded to the top two in each weight class, and the day’s medal winners included Gallatin’s Levi Michener, who went 5-0 to take first in the 103-pound class; Ryan Hicks, who also won five matches to grab first in the 189-pound class; and Cody Selby, who finished 2-1 and second in the 140-pound class.
Kyle Croy won three of five matches to finish third in the 135-pound class. Billy Kerns finished 3-2 and third in the 160-pound class. Dale Curtis won two matches (fourth place) in a tough 152-pound class that included a national champion, state medalist and state qualifier.
Other GHS records for the day were: Nathan Gann (119), 2-3; Andrew Hood (145), 1-4; Britton Wright (171), 2-3; and Bradley Jones (215), 2-3.
While Gallatin varsity wrestlers were earning success at Lexington, Bulldog junior varsity grapplers were competing in the Polo varsity duals against South Harrison, KC Ruskin, Rock Port, Polo and Lone Jack.
"This was a great opportunity for our kids to get some varsity time," said Coach Limb. "Our boys ended up beating South Harrison’s varsity, which I felt was a pretty great accomplishment for a jayvee team," he added. "The kids ended up eighth of ten, which isn’t bad for a junior varsity."
Competing against varsity squads, Gallatin’s jayvee defeated South Harrison, 36-24; lost to Ruskin, 18-48; lost to Rock Port, 18-48; lost to Polo, 18-48 and lost to Lone Jack, 30-48.
Individual Bulldog records on the day were: Terrill Wood, 5-0; Casey Alden, 3-2; James Hann, 1-4; Jeremy Hann, 1-4; Jacob Smith, 4-1; Tyler Toney, 3-2; Hunter Prentice, 0-5; Jordan Phelps, 1-4; Derrick Feigly, 2-3; and Nick Lagodny, 1-4.
Gallatin fell to Marceline, 48-31, in dual action Tuesday night in Marceline. Match winners for the Bulldogs were Michener, Selby, Curtis, Hicks and Corwin. Jones won his match by forfeit.
Gallatin wrestlers travel to Trenton this Saturday for more tournament action.
