Gallatin varsity basketball teams celebrated state rankings on Tuesday by taking a pair of non-conference games from Gilman City.
The Lady Bulldogs, ranked #9 in Class 2, defeated the Lady Hawks, 38-30, to move to 5-1 on the season. Gallatin turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, giving up only nine points combined in the final two periods
Gilman City’s girls led, 10-5, after the opening quarter, but Gallatin tied the score at 21-21 at the break, before moving ahead, 31-28, at the end of the third period.
GHS guards Ashley Owens and Courtney Ray combined for 19 points. Owens led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 and Ray chipped in nine. Center Kelsha Bundy knocked down 10 points in the paint for Gallatin.
Gilman City, 2-2, got 13 points from all-state guard Monica Wilson, eight from Kyla Payne and seven from Abbie Herrold.
Gallatin’s undefeated boys, ranked #6 in the state poll, raced to leads of 25-13 and 47-23 in the first half, and cruised to a 70-43 victory over the Hawks in the nightcap.
Nic Burrell paced the Bulldogs with 22 points, followed by Andrew Adkison with 16. Bryant Elder led the Hawks with 13 points.
Gallatin teams travel to Trenton on Friday for non-conference tilts. Gilman City resumes HDC Conference play at Pattonsburg.
