These programs are administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs which has established rules and procedures to obtain these well earned benefits.
Veterans acting on their own have experienced difficulties including denials, not only in obtaining these benefits, but also in learning what benefits and programs are available to them.
For this reason the national veterans organizations such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Amvets along with the Missouri Veterans Commission have established staffs of Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) to help acquaint veterans of their earned benefits.
The VSOs have knowledge of the methods of the bureaucracy and will help veterans to apply for their earned benefits and guide them through the procedures. In addition the VSO may detect infractions and errors that can occur, and help in appeal procedures.
Though VSOs are staffed through national veteran organizations, the veteran need NOT be a member of any organization to receive help from a VSO.
From time to time, the VSOs, do band together and conduct workshops to advise veterans and their families of their available benefits and to help apply for them.
A workshop of this type is planned for Saturday Oct. 28, to be held in the Senior Center of Trenton, beginning at 1 p.m.. The senior center is located just west of Hwy. 65 at the 28th Street exit. (The Super 8 Motel is near by.)
Veterans and families who are seeking help need to bring a copy of discharge papers, DD214 or equivalent. Also, if you have previously filed a claim, bring a copy of any correspondence relating to it.
