Wood leads strong ground attack; Duffy’s all-around play aids 39-0 shutout

If the Maysville Wolverines were looking for a little magic to rub off of the 1956 MHS team, honored Friday night for their undefeated and Grand River Conference championship season, they were out of luck.

Gallatin unleashed a potent and punishing running game that rolled up nearly 400 yards and 39 points as the #2 ranked Bulldogs ran their season record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Credit a strong defensive effort, and Gallatin’s superior punting game, for an effective jump start against an initially charged-up Wolverine squad.

Justin Duffy stood on the Bulldog 12-yard line and boomed a punt that rolled dead at the Wolverine 24. Four plays later, Maysville’s punter let loose a 10-yard effort that gave the Bulldogs a starting point on the MHS 35.

Stephen Wood ripped off a 30-yard run, and capped the short series with a six-yard scoring plunge. Corey Lee added the PAT, and the Bulldogs were on their way.

Linebacker Derrick Love forced and recovered a fumble to start the second quarter, and provided a 36-yard run on offense to set up another TD. With his first carry of the season, Duffy blasted up the middle and ran untouched into the end zone. Lee’s extra point was good.

Two minutes later, Wood ran 39 yards for another score, with Lee, Jon Brown, Riley Rains and Andrew Adkison all out front blocking.

Nic Burrell kept on the option and scored with 2:34 left in the half. Duffy intercepted a Jake Mazurkewycz pass that set up a 27-yard TD run by Riley Rains as time elapsed in the first half.

Gallatin’s offense sputtered early in the third period with a fumble inside the Wolverine 10-yard line, and missed field goal attempt, but Lee forced a fumble and Duffy recovered to provide the game’s final scoring drive.

Sophomore Kyle Croy packed over the goal line from four yards out to up the ante to 39-0.

Gallatin’s defense closed out the game with a Kevin Chadwick fumble recovery after a botched hook and ladder, catch/lateral play. Derrick Teel intercepted a Maysville pass with two minutes remaining.

Wood rushed for 166 yards on just 14 carries, and Burrell added 109 yards on 11 rushing attempts.

Defensively, Burrell registered 11 tackles. Love, who sustained a shoulder stinger in the first half, managed to chalk up nine tackles in just over one quarter of action. Andy Ward finished with eight tackles and Lee contributed seven with a fumble recovery. Duffy had five tackles, a fumble recovery and interception.
