A 22 month-old boy, Kyle Burke, is stable and recovering according to his grandmother, Jenny Russell of Coffey, although he remains in the intensive care unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital today (Wednesday).

Kyle was seriously injured when he was struck by the right rear tire of a pickup driven by his grandmother, Lisa Long, 48, Jamesport. The accident happened at about 4:35 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24.

His grandmother said, "They’re telling us he’s doing very well. He’s recovering, and his prognosis is very good." She added that there has been a huge outpouring of support from the community and lots of prayers. Kyle will be two-years-old in December.

According to a report by the Missouri Highway Patrol, the 1998 Ford Pickup was southbound in a private driveway at Elmwood Avenue, five miles south of Gilman City, when the boy was struck. Kyle was taken to Harrison County Community Hospital in Bethany by Harrison County Ambulance, then taken by Life-Net Helicopter to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

The accident was investigated by Tpr. J.P. Lynch.

No summons was issued.

Three area teenagers were seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident at about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, in Gentry County.

According to a report by the Missouri Highway Patrol, Andrea Egbert, 18, Pattonsburg, was eastbound on Route Z four miles east of King City. The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am traveled off the south side of the roadway, then came back onto the highway, then drove off the south side again, rolling several times before coming to rest upright in a farm field.

Andrea and a passenger in the vehicle, Geoffrey VanWye, 16, Gallatin, were taken by Grand River Ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Another passenger, Aaron Williams, 14, Winston was taken by Lifenet Air Ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph and then transported to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. Andrea and Geoffrey were wearing their seat belts, Aaron was not.

The car was totaled and towed by Talon Tow of Amity.

The accident was investigated by Tpr. T. Heintz, assisted by Tpr. J.S. Johnson, King City Police Department, Grand River Ambulance and Lifenet Air Ambulance.
