Softball girls beat King City, 4-2, now 5-1 in GRC
Shelby Chadwick singled in a pair of runs and Lacey Dixon doubled home another to propel Gallatin to a 4-2 softball victory over King City in Grand River Conference action on Tuesday.
Gallatin, 5-1 in the conference, kept its title hopes alive with the win, but must travel to Maysville tonight (Wednesday) to make up a game rained out on Aug. 29. With one loss each in league play, the loser drops out of the hunt. The Lady Bulldogs will also travel to unbeaten Hamilton on Monday (5:30) to complete a game suspended by rain on Sept. 21. Gallatin owns a 4-0 lead in that game, which will resume in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lady Bulldogs spent nearly all of Tuesday’s game looking for breathing room on the scoreboard. King City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Gallatin came back with three runs in its half of the frame. Ayrica Batson walked, Courtney Ray singled, Maggie Strange walked and Chadwick delivered a two-run single.
The Lady Wildkats loaded the bases twice in the fifth inning, but the Lady Bulldogs worked out of the jam by giving up just one run. Alyssa Strein singled to open the sixth inning and scored on Dixon’s double.
Jennifer Guffey helped squash a KCHS rally in the fourth inning from her center field position when she cut down a runner trying to score from second base.
Dixon earned the win and pitched two strong innings to end the game. She struck out nine batters, including four of the last seven she faced.
Following tonight’s contest, Gallatin travels to Jamesport tomorrow for what could be a preview of the Class 1, District 13 title game. The Lady Bulldogs are the top seed in the six-team event. Tri-County is seeded second. District play begins next Wednesday on Gallatin’s field.
